2007 UNOFFICIAL RESULTS
Standings:
So far the September Lunker of the Month is lead by Jeff Blanck with a 46 incher that was caught at 1:00 AM September 1st on Mille Lacs. I have a feeling it won’t last, though. September is usually a big fish month. Jack Pertz made it to the list with fish from his trip with Kevin Stenzel to the Indian Chain in Ontario. Mike Bowers, Derek Ward and Jim Lavern were in Ontario also, but on a different body of water, LOTW. Lake o the Woods treated them well with a dozen fish being added to the list. Jim added a 50 and two 48 inchers to his list. Nice job guys. Alex Bunch made the list also. He landed a 32 inch musky from Pierce Lake. They’re still in there! Way to go Alex. As far as standings, there were only a few position changes in the club. Mike Bowers, Mike Leombruni, Allen Tracey, Kevin Stenzel, Terry Reints and Jason Penticoff all moved up in their respective divisions.

The weather is playing a big part in the success, or lack of, during fishing trips all over the musky world. High water in northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin has hurt the normal numbers from the "local " lakes such as Pierce and the Madison Chain. The Chain has had a no wake rule in effect for a couple weeks and that has slowed boating some for those not wanting to putt across the bigger lakes. Many of the northern lakes have been hurt by the low water levels, some as much as 18-20 inches. The sand bars and reefs come into play, in some places that you never knew. Be careful out there even on the lakes you have fished before. The water temperatures have been way above average for this time of year, also. Water releases are better for the fish during these times. With the season approaching fall, the water temps should become cooler and that makes for less stress on the fish. Plus this becomes big fish time of year. The last of the summer patterns should be in play now. Lake turn over will be here in about a month and then the fish should really start to feed. I can’t wait for that fall fishing! Be sure to be on your favorite lake up north the day after the first hard freeze of late September. That should get the fish moving. They will start to move from their deeper suspended areas to the feeding haunts like the weed edges again. Jerk baits/glide baits, spinner baits and topwater should show some fish. Wait a little longer for the sucker bite to kick in, maybe when the water temps drop a little more. Then have a sucker on a quickset rig waiting for that follow up that won’t hit your lure, and figure 8 near your sucker. There’s nothing better than seeing a musky hit your sucker next to the boat, with the clicker screaming, you can’t get to the rod quick enough.
The standings are making a few shifts from entries sent in recently. A few names were added to the list. Charlie Wilhelmson, Jason Penticoff, Terry Reints, Jim Lavern, Jay Lindquist and Luke Carlson have sent in entries and were added to the list. A few nice fish have been added also. The July Lunker of the Month goes to Tim Scruggs with his 54 incher from LOTW. Russ Hoernecke was close with a 53 incher from Lake St Clair. August Lunker of the Month starts out with a 52 incher from Mark Carlson. There’s not much time left for entries to top that fish. Luke Carlson jumps to the top of the Junior Disvision with catches from the St Lawrence River. A 51 incher tops his list. If you have any August catches, be sure to get them to me ASAP before time runs out.

Members Only Release Contest 2007
*If you caught a fish in July, you better get that release form in very soon. You must have the form to me with-in 30 days of the catch for it to count in the contest.
July was a busy month for the Members Only Contest. Release forms came flying in from all over the musky world. People have been fishing everywhere and have been having tremendous luck while doing so. Russ and Mary Hoernecke returned from their annual trip to Canyon lake with 43 fish under their belts combined. 23 for Russ and 20 for Mary. This is not at all unusual, however something catastrophic happened during this trip that will live on for years to come! Get this!...Mary caught a musky........wait for it........on a YELLOW Mepps instead of a purple one. This 38 inch musky must have freaked out when it saw it was Mary on the other end. We’re all in shock. Keep up the good work Mary. It’s nice to see your getting versatile. I hope the counseling for the purple withdrawals goes well. The Junior Division was on a rampage with Dan Blanck and Kyle Scruggs tearing up LOTW. 16 fish for Dan and 10 for Kyle with a 51 incher and 50 incher respectively. Nice job guys. Dillan Smith is also on the Juniors board with a 38.5 incher from Eagle Lake Ontario. Take a look at the Masters 300 standings. Man did that category go nuts! Mark Carlson was in heaven with 26 fish totaling 529 points including a whopping 58 incher! The St. Lawrence River must have been on fire the last part of June. Russ Hoernecke is in 2nd with 31 fish totaling 319 points. Most of his fish are from the Canyon trip but he has a few others from the Hoernecke trip to Lake St Clair. Jerry Oestreich is on the M300's board with his fish from LOTW. Derek Ward rounds out the Division with 2 fish from LOTW. Very nice guys. The Men’s Masters has a few changes. Jeff Blanck had luck on his LOTW trip with 16 fish up to 48.5 putting him in 1st place. Duane Nichols added a few more fish to his totals from LOTW putting him in 2nd. Mike McClammer is in 3rd with fish from Lake St. Clair and John Pfaff is on the Masters board with a fish from Irving Lake. The Men’s Division went NUTS as many members went on their summer fishing trips. Lake o the Woods was the one of the hot spots counting for the majority of the entries. 15 of the top 16 places in the Men’s Division are a result of the LOTW trips that were taken this summer. Phil Blanck leads the group with a nice lead and a 4 footer under his belt. Tim Scruggs is in 2nd with what can only be described as "An Incredible Trip". He caught 4 fish over 50 during the LOTW outing with 54 inches as the biggest. That makes for a very nice average length and a nice point total. Steve Ruhmann, Brock Jack, Mike Sullivan (personal best twice - 50 and 50.5), Allen Tracey and Dean Rahn (personal best and tied personal best - 50 and 50) are all hot on Tim heals for a tight race. Scott Grabow, Dave Jack, Ted Ustich, Dick Estes, Stu Adrian and Tom Pellant were all on LOTW accounting for another 28 fish between them. Included in that bunch are Ted Ustich’s 2 - 51 inchers. One of those 51s was the most 54 inch looking 51s I’ve ever seen. Bob Bunch didn’t have to drive too far to add to his numbers with a 37" Pierce musky. Nice job. The next three were on LOTW also with Gene Seuring, Jerry Lewis and Mike Kanaval. Jerry did another one of his famous late entry tricks with a 51 incher that as he says, and I quote, "I can’t lift these G&$ D@## fish". That means they’re heavy! Kevin Bunch boated 6 more fish from Pierce Lake but only 3 of them were at or above the 30 inch mark. It’s nice to see there are still fish growing in Pierce. Mike Smith was in Ontario also, just on different water, Rowan Lake is very clear but also has some nice fish in it. Mike found a nice 48.5 incher while he was there. The ‘Daves’ had some luck on Wingra. Dave Reed and Dave Estes both added to their numbers with only a short drive. Kevin Stenzel and Harvey Gustafson were on LOTW and caught a 45 and 41 respectively. Harvey even posted a nice picture of his new grandson while we were on the island. Congratulations to Eric and Lisa Gustafson for their newborn. Steve Bourbon was in Madison catching fish from both Waubesa and Wingra. It’s nice to see the entire Chain has fish moving. Kenn Blair stayed in Illinois and is on the boards with a 39 incher from Lake Sule. Rounding out the updates is Darin Pinne with a 37 incher from Big Sissabagama. The numbers sure changed this month. Be sure to check out the Lunkers Of the Month. They are some very respectable fish! I’m sure that the numbers will adjust more as entries keep coming in and fishing trips are planned. This is only mid summer, so the best is yet to come. That puts us at 282 fish for the season, up 227 from last month. Let’s go for the Flatlander record! "Set the hooks!" and be careful out there! See you next month. Jeff Blanck

July
Members Only Release Contest 2007
The summer pattern is now upon us, pretty much everywhere. Even Canada is showing water temperatures in the 70's and the fish are moving to their summer haunts. Most lakes should be seeing fish on the deeper weed edges and suspended fish should be showing up around schools of bait fish and just off the structures. While working a weed line, don’t be afraid to turn around and cast towards open water. There are fish out there, just give it a shot. Try Bulldawgs, heavier spinner baits and crank baits for these fish. With the heavier boat traffic, be sure to try the night bite also. Muskies will move back in to the weeds, when things quiet down for the night, and feed. Remember to "reel ‘til you feel" when surface bait fishing. Too many times fish are missed when the hook is set on the blow up noise and the fish hasn’t got to the hooks yet. Release forms slowed down this month mainly, I believe, to the continuous fronts rolling through and closing the fishes mouths. They don’t know what to do, eat or wait, eat or wait. With weather stabilizing, they should start to eat more regularly. Watch the weather for your best times to fish as the approaching fronts, after some stable weather, get the fish moving. Also, let the moon phases tell you when to be on the big fish spot you have had success fishing. Moon rise, moon set, sun rise, sun set...go to your best spot with a confidence bait. Keep in mind that as the summer season progresses and the water gets warmer, the threat of fish dying from being caught increases. When you start seeing water temperatures in the high 70's you may think about waiting to fish that body of water until things cool down a little. The stress of hot water is deadly for muskies. Good luck out there and set the hook hard!
*If you caught a fish in June, you better get that release form in very soon. You must have the form to me with-in 30 days of the catch for it to count in the contest.
Only 9 release forms were turned in since our last newsletter. Allen Tracey had a good month with 4 fish to add, putting him in 1st place in the Men’s Division. Redstone was good to him with 35, 38, 41, 44 inch muskies using spinner baits. Russ and Mary Hoernecke went to St Clair and caught muskies of 41 and 40 inches respectively trolling crakbaits. Russ also got a 33 incher on Wingra with a bucktail. Steve Bourbon joins the crowd with a couple fish from Madison. A 32 incher from Waubesa on a jerkbait and a 36 incher from Wingra on a bucktail. Good job everyone! I would expect to see quite a few forms showing up soon as the July prime time fishing gets into full swing. I know there are many trips planned for this month and I can’t wait to hear the stories. Good luck, be safe and have fun!
