June Meeting Date - Location Change
This month’s meeting will be held on Saturday June 27th at Rock Cut State Park. We will
meet at the parking lot next to the dam at 9:30 AM...rain or shine. We will be shocking the
spillway below the dam to find game fish to put back into Pierce Lake. We have historically had
a great time doing this so we thought we’d make a meeting out of it. If you’ve never witnessed
or participated in this, be sure to attend as it can be very exciting to catch so many game fish
in the nets, measure them and put them into tanks to bring up to the lake. Be sure to wear
clothes that can get dirty and wet as we welcome everyone to wade into the action. Bring rain
suits if you just want to watch and umbrellas if you’d like to photo the action if it rains. We will
be meeting Dan Salle from the Illinois DNR. Dan will be assisting us on this work day
meeting with the DNR boat and generator. Kids are welcome but they must be chaperoned as
we will be in and out of the water while the generator is shocking the fish. This is a great time
for the kids to see up close the difference in the fish and witness how to handle them. Don’t
miss this meeting. Be sure to bring a friend!
Kids Free Fishing Day Summary
Well, another Kids Day has come and gone. What a great time it was. The rain held off until
the very end and even when it did rain it wasn’t that bad. There was about 75 kids that
attended the event with MANY fish getting caught. There were even a few bass caught from
shore to really put up a fight on the light tackle. Again this year, every child that stayed until
the end went away with a nice prize and rod/reel combo if they wanted it. The prizes were
donated by Jon Trent last year. Actually, he donated so many that there was enough for last
year’s event as well as this year’s event. That’s a lot of toys! Thanks Jon. We also had
continuing support for this event from Norstar Mechanical and Nissan Forklift. We certainly
appreciate their support. Leo Hauser kicked in a very nice donation to help the cause as well
as bringing his daughter to volunteer their time to help the kids. Many thanks go out to those
that volunteered on behalf of the club and we thank you very much. I’ll try to list all that
volunteered and if I miss anyone, please forgive me: Steve Ruhmann, Tim Scruggs,
Kyle Scruggs, Dick Estes, Jack Pertz, Jeff Blanck, John Pfaff, Phil Blanck, Jim Lavern,
Leo Hauser, Jerry Larson, Bob Bunch, Russ Hoenecke, Mary Hoernecke, Stu Adrian,
Scott Grabow and of course Amy Shackleton. Thank you Amy for organizing everything again
this year. You make this a truly great event. Also a big thank you, to all the spouses, friends
and family that help out during this event. Your support is really appreciated. If you are
interested in helping out next year be sure to contact Amy to let her know. If you’d like
to see some photos from the day’s event, be sure to check out the Flatlander section of
www.muskylink.com. Where you can also add photos if you have some.
Thank you again to everyone that made this day possible.
Change in Committee Chairman Duties
Well, the economy has struck again. Due to the need to make house payments
(and boat payments) I will be spending the next years workdays in Bloomington, Il. At least
I’ll be home on weekends but it makes it hard to attend general meetings and EC meetings
in order to fulfill my obligations as the Newsletter Editor and Members Only Contest
Chairman. I will need to hand these duties off to other Flatlanders members in order to
ensure they get done properly with up to date information. I feel I cannot do that while
working out of town, absent from meetings. This is the last newsletter I will be writing
for a little while. The newsletter will now be done by Wally Haas, and I couldn’t hand
it off to a better person. Wally has -plenty of writing skills an Editor for the Rockford
Register Star. Wally is already the Flatlander Secretary on the Executive Board and is
catching more muskies than ever. He’ll do a great job. Thanks Wally. The Members
Only Contest will be documented by Kyle Scruggs. Kyle will also do a great job as he is
really getting into this whole “musky” thing by catching some huge fish over the last
few years. Be sure to send your release forms to Kyle at the following address:
5520 Cypress Lane Machesney Park Illinois 61115
and his e-mail address is addicted2musky50@att.net.
I thank you both, guys for picking up the slack. There is definitely a need for
more help on the board and committees if anyone is interested...now more
than ever as tasks are being done by only a few members. I know the club
would appreciate your help. Jeff Blanck
No July Meeting
There will be no July general meeting for the club this summer. Many members will be
venturing out to their favorite fishing hole to try for the elusive musky. Sometimes it’s
hard to get members off the water long enough to talk about fishing...well we’ve talked
about it enough...it’s time to catch some muskies! We’ll see you in August. Stay tuned
for August meeting information in the next newsletters.
September Vermilion Outing
There’s still a couple openings for anyone wanting to go to Vermilion with a group
of us in September. The 12th through the 19th is the week and we’ll be staying at
Vermilion Dam Lodge at a cost of $285 per person. There are some giants in that
lake just waiting for us. If you are interested, be sure to contact Jeff Blanck for
more information.
Members Only Contest
Well mother nature is sure making things tough again this spring. The water temps are
running way behind where they usually are this time of year. This makes for some tough
fishing with patterns being hard to find. The sucker bite has been a good one this spring
due to low water temps, also. By now the early summer pattern is usually in high gear
but the fish are still reacting to the post spawn type movements. They should really start
kicking in as the temps approach the upper 60's and into the low 70's. If you find a
pattern...BE SURE TO LET ME KNOW!!!
Good luck on the water and be safe out there.
